Plant epigenetics explores how plants regulate gene activity without changing the DNA sequence itself. Some of these changes can persist even after the original environmental signal has disappeared, creating a form of molecular memory. This allows plants to store information about past conditions and use it to guide their development. A classic example is the “memory of winter”, which enables plants to recognise that they have experienced a sufficiently long period of cold and to flower at the right time in spring.
