We are a team of scientists combining structural biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry. We focus on RNA and its role in gene regulation — in other words, how cells translate genetic information into specific functions. To achieve this, we use methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and other modern approaches that allow us to observe molecules in detail and understand how they interact with one another.
Understanding how cells regulate genetic information is essential for understanding both health and disease. Errors in these processes can lead to a wide range of disorders. Our research contributes to understanding these mechanisms and provides a foundation for the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
We have described how cells regulate gene activity at the level of RNA and proteins. For example, we have explained how the Dicer enzyme functions, which plays a key role in gene regulation, and how proteins recognize and read genetic information during its processing.
We have also clarified how cells terminate the transcription of genetic information and how they respond to DNA damage. Our work further shows how viruses exploit these processes during cell infection. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of cell function and how they become disrupted in disease.
