Young researchers of the Institute of Biophysics (IBP) of the Czech Academy of Sciences are inviting students and postdocs to IBP career day: Per Aspera Ad Astra focused on future career possibilities in the academic and industrial spheres. During the event, four outstanding scientists will share stories of their scientific journeys and will lead popular round table discussions on various topics.Confirmed speakers:
Hana Lísalová (group leader, Institute of Physics, Czech Academy of Sciences; FZU CAS) leads research in biosensors, bio-inspired materials, and (nano)coatings, focusing on the intricate dynamics of biomolecular interactions at interfaces under near-native conditions. She holds a Ph.D. in Biophysics from Charles University in Prague and expanded her expertise during a postdoctoral fellowship in chemical engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. In 2019, Hana established an interdisciplinary bio-interface research program at the FZU CAS. Over the last six years, while raising three daughters Helen, Adéla, and Justýna, she has built a research group, honed her leadership and mentoring skills, and received recognition, including the 2022 Werner von Siemens, and 2024 ICBZM Mid-career Awards.
Aleš Benda is a head of Imaging Methods Core Facility at BIOCEV, Charles University, where he facilitates the usage of advanced microscopy methods for diverse research and also commercial projects. After his Ph.D. in physical chemistry at Charles University, he initially focused on development of new optical microscopy techniques during his three postdocs at Germany, Czechia and Australia. Already at the end of his stay at UNSW in Sydney, he shifted towards core facilities operation, now further extended to participating in national and European large research infrastructures.
Alena Uvizl works as a senior scientist in the Czech biotech company DIANA Biotechnologies in the Drug Discovery department. Alena is a molecular biologist with a passion for cancer research and drug discovery. She graduated at Charles University in Prague, followed by a PhD at Technische Universität Dresden. Her PhD project was focused on cell cycle regulation and its impact on tumorigenesis. Currently, her main interest is the development of techniques to facilitate and speed up drug discovery. This allows Alena to keep her scientific dreams unchanged, as she continues to seek involvement in pioneering research and innovation.
Matyáš Fendrych is a group leader at the Institute of Experimental Botany, CAS, in Prague. He studies the role of chromatin in epigenetic regulation and maintenance of genome stability in plants. After his Ph.D. studies at the Leibnitz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (DE), he went for a post-doc at the Gregor Mendel Institute of Plant Molecular Biology in Vienna (AT). Then he established his own research direction as a group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Cologne (DE). Proud father of two, an enthusiastic badminton player, and a gardener.
