Project AutoDrive, in which CEITEC BUT is involved, has been launched

Project AutoDrive, financed by ECSEL Joint Undertaking under the Horizont 2020 research and innovation programme, launched its research activities. The aim of the project is the development of technologies for automated and automatic vehicles and their verification.
Automated driving is a topic which increasingly interests the leading automotive industry companies. Moreover, in Europe, development and production in the automotive and electro-technical industries also have a leading competitive power. In order for the European market to maintain this, it is necessary to strengthen European research activities in the area of advanced electronic technologies, enabling the processing and transmission of an enormous volume of data in real time and addressing the reliability and safety issues of electronic systems of future cars.
In response to this global need, project AutoDrive (Advancing fail-aware, fail-safe, and fail-operational electronic components, systems, and architectures for fully automated driving to make future mobility safer, affordable, and end-user acceptable) joins together the leading European companies, suppliers and manufacturers from the automotive industry, as well as research institutions, including not only CEITEC BUT, but also ITRI from Taiwan, through which the project also acquires an extra-European overlap. The aim of this cooperation is to create a pan-European ecosystem whose key task will be not only to prepare components and subsystems for automated driving but also to initiate related norms and standards. Integrated electronic components, electronic structural components and embedded computing systems for fully automated driving will, therefore, be developed.
“A total of 58 partners will be involved in the project with the budget of more than EUR 65 million, with the aim of developing a wide range of technologies. In total, it will be divided into ten research areas, such as 3D surround scanning, or fail-operational control and electronic systems. At CEITEC, we will focus mainly on the development of systems for the perception of the surroundings of the vehicle and the powertrain capable of driving even in the case of a defect,” stated the head of the Cybernetics in Material Science research group prof. Pavel Václavek, who is, together with his team, the CEITEC BUT principal investigator of the project.
The AutoDrive project results will significantly contribute to safer, more reliable and more efficient mobility, increase driver comfort in challenging and routine situations and open up space for new business models in the transport sector. In addition, the project is the cornerstone of the European Lighthouse Initiative on electro-mobility and automated vehicles - Mobility.E.
