Scientific Illustration Workshop: Visual Communication of Complex Ideas

Visual culture is becoming an increasingly prominent part of our cultural identity in the 21st century. Consequently, images have become an important tool with which to communicate science.  Join us to learn how to become more effective visual communicator of your research by incorporating graphic design skills into your scientific work. 

Workshop Facilitators

This workshop will be facilitated by two representatives of the German science design company Sci-Illustrate. Sci-Illustrate is a creative agency that specifically caters to the various design needs of Biotech and Healthcare companies.   • Dr. Radhika Patnala (PhD)

Neuroscientist, Founder and Creative Director, Sci-Illustrate

Dr. Radhika Patnala has trained for over a year in Brand Strategy Design Consultancy with a creative agency in California and a leader in Brand Strategy & Design. Before the conception of Sci-Illustrate, Dr. Patnala received her doctorate in Neuroscience as Validictorian from the National University of Singapore, and a Masters in Biotechnology (Research) from The Australian National University.  She has over 8 years of bio-medical research experience, with expertise in neuroscience, immunology, epigenetics and cancer biology. With an eclectic skill-set ranging from graphic design to motion graphics, she puts creative & scientific teams together to assist the life-science research and healthcare community with their design needs.

  • Dr. Arne Fabritius

    Neuroscientist, Protein Engineer and Scientific advisor, Sci-Illustrate

    Dr Fabritius received his doctorate from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, for his research in protein engineering at Max Plank Institute of Neurobiology. He is a recipient of the prestigious IMPRS Graduate Fellowship and The Young Scientist Award 2018 from the Max Plank Institute of Neurobiology. He is passionate about scientific innovation in any form, be it engineering, robotics, machine learning to biotechnology and protein engineering. Dr. Fabritus is motivated by using design to solve communication problems, and holds years of expertise in scientific illustration and visual communication.

  •  Basics of visual design and good practices
  •  Introduction to Adobe Illustrator – software interface
  • Graphic/file types and importing principles
  • Manipulating graphic elements  (shape/path)

  • Basics of alignment and advanced applications
  • Colour basics
  • 2 Case studies

15.00 – 16.00

Q and A: Individual Design Work with Support

 

Registration Requirements

This workshop is intended for junior researchers from CEITEC MU. Due to the limited capacity of only 15 seats in this workshop we will be distributing the seats among as many research groups as possible. Junior researchers who will be selected to participate in this workshop will be asked to transfer their newly gained graphic design skills to their peers. Thank you for your understanding and your interest to acquire and share new skills!
