About Eric

Professor Eric Daniel Glowacki studied chemistry at the University of Rochester in the USA, where he obtained both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in materials chemistry in 2009. His early work focused on optical and optoelectronic materials. At the same time, he studied the history of Central Europe, earning a second degree in 2009 as part of a dual study program.

He completed his PhD in chemistry in 2013 at Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria, where he specialized in bioelectronics and flexible electronic devices. He continued in Linz as a postdoctoral researcher (2013–2016), during which his research gradually shifted toward electrophysiology, particularly optoelectronic stimulation of excitable cells.

In 2016, he received the Wallenberg Molecular Medicine Fellowship, which allowed him to establish his own independent research group at Linköping University in Sweden. There, his team focused on the development of devices for nervous system stimulation as well as the generation of reactive oxygen species. These two research areas — stimulation devices and electro-/photochemistry of reactive oxygen species — form the core of his scientific interests.

In 2020, he was awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant, which enabled him to move to Brno and establish a new bioelectronics research group at CEITEC Brno University of Technology. Eric is interested in neural interface technologies and bioelectronic medicine, as well as fundamental research in electrophysiology.

Beyond his main research areas, Eric is also interested in history, first aid and emergency response. He speaks Polish, Czech, and English.
