We provide non-destructive 3D analysis of the cellular structure of foams and other porous materials using computed tomography (CT). The method enables the segmentation of individual cells and other structural features, visualization of their spatial arrangement, and quantitative evaluation of the material’s internal structure.

Method

The analysis is based on the segmentation of CT data into topologically disconnected components, which can subsequently be visualized individually and statistically evaluated. A typical application is the characterization of foam materials consisting of a solid or liquid matrix containing gas-filled cavities.

The method enables the analysis of both closed-cell and open-cell foams. In closed-cell structures, individual cavities are completely surrounded by material, whereas in open-cell foams, the cells are interconnected. Segmentation of CT data enables the spatial arrangement of cells to be characterized and quantitative information on their size, shape, and distribution to be obtained.

The analysis can also be applied to other types of cellular and particulate structures consisting of individual objects embedded in a surrounding medium, such as bulk materials, sediments, drill cores, and other geological samples. The results provide comprehensive 3D characterization of the internal structure and enable statistical evaluation of individual components.

Equipment

The analysis is performed using industrial computed tomography (CT) systems and the specialized Foam Structure Analysis module in VGSTUDIO MAX. The module enables segmentation of individual components within CT data, their 3D visualization, and subsequent statistical analysis.
