Multimodal Microscopy Workshop 2026

About event

Towards Standardized Nanomechanical Measurements

Workshop Overview
This workshop traditionally focuses on multimodal correlation microscopy. Building on previous years, it now also focuses on standardization in nanomechanical measurements

The 2026 edition will focus exclusively on nanomechanics and standardization of mechanical measurements, particularly in soft and biological samples.

Key Topics

  • Raman, fluorescence & optical microscopy
  • AFM imaging & full-indentation spectroscopy
  • Nanoindentation of soft and biological samples
  • Preparation and use of reference samples
  • Standardized protocols for soft-matter nanomechanics
  • FAIR/Open Data approaches in nanomechanical research

- Calibration procedures and their impact on mechanical data evaluation

- Contact point determination and curve fitting strategies

- Measurements in liquid environments

- Sources of variability in repeated measurements and their role in standardization

- Probe selection and its influence on results

- Microrheology of soft materials

- Advanced data analysis approaches

- Brillouin microscopy – comparison with indentation-based mechanics

Pilot Sample Concept

Instead of separating techniques, the workshop will include a pilot reference sample, which will be: measured on multiple instruments, analyzed using different evaluation strategies, compared across platforms

As added value, selected Core Facilities (e.g. EM, CELLIM, etc.) will contribute complementary characterization of the same sample to demonstrate how different methods inform mechanical interpretation and how facilities synergize.
