ABSTRACT:
Bambusurils are macrocycles that were created in our group and first reported in 2010. These compounds with the shape of a nanometer-sized tube bind various inorganic and organic anions through the concert of several types of supramolecular interactions in organic solvents and water. In this talk, the unique structure of bambusurils will be discussed and the reasons why these molecules are one of the most potent anion receptors ever reported will be given. Further objectives are to discuss possible applications of bambusurils in diverse fields such as: (i) anion sensing (in conjugation with NMR), (ii) anion transport through the cell membranes, (iii) gold mining, and others.
