In a joint statement, the rectors of the seven member universities of the Research Universities Association (AVUni) express concern over the proposed change to the funding of Czech Television and Czech Radio. They point out that transferring the funding of public service media to the state budget may weaken their financial stability and increase the risk of indirect political pressure. The rectors also criticise the way the proposal is being considered and call on lawmakers not to support it in its current form. They emphasise that any changes to funding must be the result of open expert and public discussion and must guarantee the independence of the media, their financial stability and the quality of the public service provided.
The issue concerns universities because public service media play an essential role in education and in communicating research to the public.
