Researchers' Night 2024 at CEITEC MUNI

About event

The basic variable of the world is transformation. From evolution in nature to revolution in technology. Everything around us goes through its transformation and development. Let's turn one night of the year into a unique celebration of science together!

Come and enjoy the night of science at CEITEC Masaryk University! This year with the subtitle "TRANSFORMATION". The programme will take place in pavilion E35 on the University Campus; admission is free. All activities are also for English-speaking children and adults!

Programme

Gelation Metamorphosis

  • We will show how to prepare a tasty hydrogel, as well as the methods for characterization and the importance of hydrogels in cell culture and their potential in the study of heart diseases or wound healing.

Plant Regeneration

  • Plants are magical. All we see in a plant is created during their adult life. In the plant biotechnology lab, we use this propriety to build a new plant from a piece of root. We will show the different steps of this transformation.

Protein Changes in the Brain During Neurodegenerative Diseases

  • Do you wonder, what is going on in the brain during Alzheimer's or Parkinson’s disease? What are amyloid Beta, tau protein, and alpha-synuclein? Come to discover the molecular symptoms of dementia and learn how we investigate the causes of neurodegeneration. We will explain how we uncover the function of key proteins in the brain and how we can use this knowledge to develop cures.

Acid-base Homeostasis and Cancer

  • Come and try an experiment to see how pH is changed by carbonic anhydrase - an indispensable enzyme that maintains a balanced pH in your body. You'll learn how this enzyme is linked to the growth of cancer cells and what inhibitors can help stop this growth. We will show you how carbonic anhydrase contributes to the acidic environment around cancer cells. You will learn how scientists use structural analysis and computer modeling to develop new cancer drugs.

DNA Variants Analysis: Can You Beat the Computer?

  • It is not unusual for DNA to mutate here and there. In addition, most changes in DNA are completely harmless. However, some changes can cause mischief - diseases. Which changes are these? At our workplace, we ask ourselves exactly the same question. While searching for the answer, we rely heavily on computer analyses. Can you do some of these analyses yourself? And can you do it faster?

Transformations of the Brain over Time

  • From immediate reactions to stimuli to long-term changes at all stages of its development. We will introduce you to methods and techniques that help us better understand how our brains are constantly changing. You will be able to try out some of these techniques for yourself. And with tours of our labs, you'll discover where it's all happening.

What Do Enzymes Do?

  • Take a fascinating journey into the world of enzymes and discover how these indispensable molecules transform and activate other molecules in our bodies and beyond. In our interactive program, you will try the role of an enzyme for yourself - adding functional groups to proteins and removing them or helping them change shape. You will discover how enzymes affect everyday life and health. Our fun quiz will test your knowledge and maybe you will discover something you never knew before. Be captivated by the magic of biochemistry and discover the secrets that shape life.

Cryogenic Transformation and Viruses in Nanoworld

  • Are you interested in how insects transform during their development? We'll show you how insects and viruses change throughout their life cycles. You'll also witness the fascinating transformation of liquid nitrogen.

Creative Corner

  • There are no limits to creativity! Come and create with us and take home a handmade memory of the Researcher's Night at CEITEC MUNI. A wide range of activities will entertain both young and adults.

Photo Corner

  • Would you like to create some memories from a night full of science and compete at the same time? Take a photo in our photo corner, tag ceitec_brno on Instagram, share it, and enter the prize draw - you can win a scan of your own brain and its 3D printed model. To keep you inspired, we prepared plenty of themed props and costumes for you.

Relax Zone

  • Every new piece of information needs to be thoroughly absorbed - and that is why we have prepared our relaxation zone for you. Take a moment to sit back and recharge your batteries for the rest of the programme. Here you can get information about the CEITEC research centre, or see how our Researchers' Night went last year. Stay hydrated.
