Regenerative Dentistry and Biomaterials

Conditions such as periodontal diseases impair the structures and functions of human craniofacial tissues, with a significant impact of the life quality of patients. If they left untreated, it can lead to the destruction of both soft and mineralized tissues that constitute the periodontium. Clinical management, including but not limited to flap debridement and/or curettage, as well as regenerative-based strategies with periodontal membranes associated or not with grafting materials, has been used with distinct levels of success. With the global aging population, it is extremely important to find novel biomaterials, particularly bioactive membranes and/or scaffolds, for guided tissue (GTR) and bone regeneration (GBR) to aid in the reestablishment of the health and function of distinct periodontal tissues. Regenerative dentistry is an interdisciplinary field, which aimsto repair or regenerate damaged tissues using biomaterials, cell technologies and tissue engineering applied to dental, oral, and craniofacial tissue regeneration. The aim of this lecture is to present the major features of diverse biomaterials, their combination, the addition of ceramics or biomolecules, and their benefits for tissue engineering applications.
