RNA is often introduced as a messenger: DNA contains the information, RNA carries it, and proteins put it into action. Simple enough. In reality, as usual, the story is more complicated.
What if the message is wrong? What if it is no longer needed? What if it comes from somewhere it shouldn’t? And what happens when the environment suddenly changes, while the DNA sequence stays exactly the same?
A cell cannot rewrite its genome every time circumstances change. Instead, it can change the way RNA molecules behave. Small modifications can alter how RNA is recognized, used, protected, or destroyed - giving cells a huge degree of flexibility without changing the genetic code.
In this lecture, we will follow the dynamic life of RNA, from quality control and immune defense to regulation and modern RNA-based medicine, and see how seemingly tiny changes can have consequences far beyond the molecule itself.
