Sip of Science: When Molecules Play Origami

About event

Nature Loves Shapes—And So Do We! Some of the most beautiful ones are tiny polyhedrals. Think shells of viruses, protein cages, and bacterial compartments—many of nature’s tools come in polyhedral shapes. Scientists have long tried to mimic these elegant polyhedra using lab-made materials, but doing it with natural molecules? That’s rare. But what if we let nature build them itself? In this study, we develop bile acids, natural molecules found in our bodies, to self-assemble into tidy molecular polyhedra. These tiny self-built shapes could help us design safer, smarter materials for medicine and technology.
